You create a character. You give them a tragic backstory. You make them incredibly talented. They accidentally become friends with every important person in the story. Three love interests appear. They unlock mysterious powers nobody else has. Suddenly someone in the comments says:
"Isn't this kind of a Mary Sue?"
And now you're questioning everything.
If you've ever written fanfiction, roleplayed online, created an original character, daydreamed about fictional worlds, or spent hours designing a protagonist, you've probably encountered the term "Mary Sue." Depending on who you ask, it's either a useful writing concept or the fastest way to start an argument in a fandom.
The truth is that most characters aren't completely Mary Sues or completely realistic. Character creation exists on a giant spectrum. Some characters feel grounded and flawed. Some are intentionally dramatic and overpowered. Others somehow collect every special ability available while remaining lovable anyway.
This quiz is not a serious writing critique. Nobody is taking away your character privileges. Instead, it's a playful look at the traits that often make readers label a character as a Mary Sue. Things like special powers, popularity, dramatic backstories, unusual talents, plot armor, and how often the universe seems determined to help them succeed.
The questions focus on your character rather than you. Imagine your favorite OC, fanfic protagonist, roleplay character, self-insert, or fictional creation while answering. Their choices, abilities, relationships, and story role will determine where they land on the Mary Sue scale.
Maybe your character is beautifully flawed and painfully realistic. Maybe they're a walking collection of special powers held together by trauma. Maybe they're somehow both.
The important thing to remember is that fictional characters are meant to be fun. Some of the most beloved characters ever created would absolutely trigger online debates if they appeared today. Sometimes readers love realistic flaws. Sometimes they want a dramatic overpowered icon who wins every battle and looks incredible doing it.
